4 Home Maintenance Tasks To Do In The Spring

After I moved into my new home, I realized that there was a serious problem with the roof. There were some shingles missing, and there were large sections that were allowing water to come into the home. I was really discouraged about the problem, so I talked with my family and friends about finding a roofer that could take care of the job. They were able to find me an incredible professional that worked hard to take care of the issue, and it was really nice to see how great of a job he did. This blog is all about getting your roof repaired correctly the first time around.

When the seasons change, it is typically a good time to do some home maintenance. It is often difficult to keep track of everything you need to do at home until something breaks, but you know when the seasons change, it is time to start investigating different areas of your home. When winter moves into spring, the following home maintenance tasks are important to keep up with.

Get Your Yard Ready For Gardening

Spring is often when people like to plant herbs or vegetables, or start a brand new garden in the backyard. Therefore, this is also the perfect time to get your yard ready. You may have had a lot of frost over the winter, so once the temperature warms up, it is the ideal time to mow the lawn, check the condition of the soil, and add fertilizer. You can prepare a plot for your new garden, trim your trees, and prune any flowers that are still hanging on following winter. You should also clear out dead leaves, branches, and other debris on the ground.

Inspect the Roof

Your roof will often let you know where there is major damage to it, such as a water leak in your home when there is a hole in the roof, but often times you don't really notice the damage. When spring arrives, head up to the roof and inspect the materials. Make sure there are no broken or missing shingles, and that you don't see signs of mold or mildew on the roofing materials. This is also the perfect time to clean out those gutters. If you notice major damage to your roof, it is time to call a roofing contractor for help.

Maintain the HVAC System

Basic maintenance of your heating and air conditioning unit is simple to do on your own, though of course you should leave the major repairs to the professionals. To maintain an HVAC system, clean out or replace the air filter, and make sure the exterior HVAC unit is cleaned on the inside and outside. This often involves dusting the fan blades and removing any debris caught inside, like leaves or twigs.

Repair Concrete Cracks

Have you noticed that your concrete has some cracks in it? Now is a good time to get those repaired. These are sometimes worsened during the winter, especially if you got a lot of ice on the ground. In the springtime, it is good to check all the concrete for cracks and fill them. This is done by first cleaning debris from the cracks, then filling them with concrete repair filler, and letting it dry. You can then seal the concrete when you're finished.
