How To Maintain A Clean And Stylish Fascia And Roofline

After I moved into my new home, I realized that there was a serious problem with the roof. There were some shingles missing, and there were large sections that were allowing water to come into the home. I was really discouraged about the problem, so I talked with my family and friends about finding a roofer that could take care of the job. They were able to find me an incredible professional that worked hard to take care of the issue, and it was really nice to see how great of a job he did. This blog is all about getting your roof repaired correctly the first time around.

When it comes to the look of your roof, the fascia board is extremely important. It is perhaps the most important style element on your roofline. So, if your fascia is warped, sagging, faded, or water logged, your entire roof line will look aged. You want to maintain clean and straight fascia boards at all times. This article explains how to fix a water damaged fascia board and prevent it from becoming saggy:

Checking Your Boards

The most important thing is to constantly inspect your fascia board for damages. Obviously, visually inspecting it is important, but it often isn't enough. The backside of your fascia, which you obviously can't see, can be the source of your problem.

Basically, you need to get up on a ladder to get up close and look at your fascia. Usually, you can tell if there is a moisture problem if the paint is peeling away. There could also be termite problems which can be harder to see. Termites can invade your wood from any angle, so you might not even be able to see the entry point. Bring a screwdriver up the ladder with you to poke and prod at the wood to make sure it is solid and structurally sound.

Reinforcing the Mounts

You might also need a power drill to tighten screws if the inside of your fascia is mounted on metal brackets. However, most fascia boards are mounted to the soffit boards using finish nails. But, you can add extra reinforcement if your nails are pulling away by adding a couple of screws. Just make sure you countersink screws so the heads don't stick out, and you can cover them later with wood putty and paint.

Fix Problems ASAP

Often, your fascia will not have any serious damage that needs to be patched or reinforced. It might just need to be sanded and painted. You can still prevent further damage by simply repainting or resealing the wood. A new coat of paint or stain can definitely strengthen your wood and prevent water damage. When it comes to maintaining your fascia board, it is all about preventative measures.

If you remain vigilant, constantly check your fascia, and fix problems as soon as you noticed them, your roofline will remain clean and stylish. The longer you wait to fix small problems, the more likely you are to end up actual structural damage and the resulting repair bills.
