4 Smart Roofing Maintenance Tasks To Perform This Summer

After I moved into my new home, I realized that there was a serious problem with the roof. There were some shingles missing, and there were large sections that were allowing water to come into the home. I was really discouraged about the problem, so I talked with my family and friends about finding a roofer that could take care of the job. They were able to find me an incredible professional that worked hard to take care of the issue, and it was really nice to see how great of a job he did. This blog is all about getting your roof repaired correctly the first time around.

Your roof is one of the most valuable parts of your home. It helps keep the water and snow out of your home, and protects everything that is inside of your home. You should take great care of your roof, as it is a valuable piece of property.

#1 Make Sure Your Gutters Are Clean

Summer is a great time to clean out your gutters. You don't have to contend with nasty weather, and hopefully, if it hasn't rained in a while, all the debris inside of the gutters will be dried up and easy to remove.

To clean out your gutters, position a ladder under your gutters, put on some work gloves, and scope the debris in your gutters out into a bucket. After you do that, you can also rinse out your gutters with a garden hose. Cleaning your gutters this summer will help ensure that your gutters are ready for all the rain this fall and winter.

#2 Install a Gutter Guard

If you want to reduce how frequently you have to clean out your gutters, have a roofing company come out and install a gutter guard on your gutters this summer. A gutter guard fits over the top of your gutters, where it helps keep large debris out of your gutters. Gutter guards are designed to ensure that debris that lands on them natural falls down and makes its way to the ground. With gutter guards in place, you should only need to clean out your gutters once a year instead of a few times a year.

#3 Consider Getting a Drip Edge

If your roof doesn't have a drip edge on it, you may want to consider having one installed this summer. A drip edge is a small improvement that you can make to your home that will help with the flow of water.

A drip edge overhangs your roof and helps direct rain into the gutter. A drip edge helps ensure that water doesn't run down the side of your house, which can be damaging, and makes its way into your gutters.

#4 Check the Caulking Around Vents

Finally, you should check the caulking around your vents on your roof. One of the sneaky ways that water can get under your roof is around roof vents, fans, chimneys, and skylights. Caulking wears down easily over a few years, so this is a regular maintenance check and task that you should do every few years.
