What To Do When Your New Roof Leaks

After I moved into my new home, I realized that there was a serious problem with the roof. There were some shingles missing, and there were large sections that were allowing water to come into the home. I was really discouraged about the problem, so I talked with my family and friends about finding a roofer that could take care of the job. They were able to find me an incredible professional that worked hard to take care of the issue, and it was really nice to see how great of a job he did. This blog is all about getting your roof repaired correctly the first time around.

What To Do When Your New Roof Leaks

If you just had a new roof installed in the past few years, and your roof starts leaking, you need to call in the professionals. A new roof leaking is a rare occurrence, but it can happen. You need to know what to do if your new roof does leak.

Don't Fix it Yourself

Do not try to get up on your roof and fix the problem yourself. If your roof has recently been installed, then it is still under warranty. That means that the roofing company that installed your roof is obligated to come back and fix your roof, at no charge to you, if your roof is defective in any way. A leak would as an issue that would fall under the warranty for your new roof.

Figure Out What You Know

Before you call the roofing company, sit down and figure out what you know. Writing down what you know will help you have a more productive conversation with your roofing contractor.

First, figure out when the leak started. When was the first time you noticed the leak? The closer you can pinpoint the date and time, the better.

Next, think about how hard it was raining or snowing when you noticed the leak. Was it only drizzling outside? Was there a downpour? Did a big storm hit your area? Being able to describe the level of rainfall can help the contractor determine what happened and where the water is coming from.

Next, try to quantify how much water comes into your home. Did a few drips may their way into your home? Or do you have a steady stream of water coming into your home?

Finally, think about where the leak seems to be coming from. Is the water coming in near where your chimney, a window, or a vent is located? The more precise you are, the more you will be able to share with the roofing company.

Call the Roofing Company

Now it is time to call the roofing company. Do not exaggerate what is happening. Use the information that you wrote down to guide your call. Keep in mind that roofing companies want to do a good job on installing your roof, and if your roof ends up having any issues, they are going to want to work with you to fix the issue.

If your new roof develops a leak, call your roofing contractor so they can come out and fix your roof. Your new roof should still be under warranty. Write down as much information as possible about when and where the leak came from, and any other information surrounding the leak.
