Roofing Damage That May Occur After Hail Storms

After I moved into my new home, I realized that there was a serious problem with the roof. There were some shingles missing, and there were large sections that were allowing water to come into the home. I was really discouraged about the problem, so I talked with my family and friends about finding a roofer that could take care of the job. They were able to find me an incredible professional that worked hard to take care of the issue, and it was really nice to see how great of a job he did. This blog is all about getting your roof repaired correctly the first time around.

Certain storms can cause massive damage to your home, specifically your roof. One storm that can cause high levels of damage, and that may go undetected, is a hail storm. If there recently was a hail storm in your area, you may want to check your roof for possible damage. Here are some ways that hail can damage your roof and what to look for.

Tile and Shingle Damage

One of the easiest forms of damage to see after a hailstorm is to your roofing tiles or shingles. If you have asphalt tiles, look for any small rips or tears. These rips or tears can cause the tile to come up or to allow water into the area. Even if you have a waterproof membrane underneath the tile, built-up water and damage can cause further damage to the membrane as well. If you find any holes or any tears in your asphalt tile, contact a roofing contractor for replacement and repairs.

Missing Tiles and Shingles

Though rips and tears or small dents in tiles can be overlooked, missing tiles are usually more evident. After a hailstorm, do a quick walk-through of your roofline. Look for any missing tiles or any areas where it looks like large spaces have occurred. These spaces can be indicators of either a missing tile or a ripped tile. If you do find missing tiles then you will want to look at the tile area. Make sure that the membrane is still intact and there is no damage to the roof itself. Your roofing contractor can replace these missing tiles and can perform a more thorough check to ensure that there is no damage to the actual roof underneath.

Cracks in the Roofing Eaves

Even if your roofing tile is not damaged, a hailstorm can still cause damage to the roofing eaves. Heavy-hitting hail can cause dents, cracks, and breaks in the wood. If these are overlooked, water can get into these areas. If there are ice storms, ice can also get into these areas and freeze. The water, ice, or melting ice can cause water damage and separation of your roofing eaves and overhangs. If you notice any dings, cracks, or other damage to the roofing eaves, call your roofing contractor immediately for an inspection.

These are just a few of the issues that can be caused by roof hail damage. If you are concerned about possible leaks or the integrity of your roof prior to storm season, contact a roofing contractor. If they can perform an inspection on the roof and let you know if there are any issues that you need to consider. They can also inform you of preventive measures you can take to reduce the chances of possible storm damage. A contractor can provide further information regarding roof hail damage.
